Descisions in reliability analysis

Description

The paper discusses a number of questions relating to the need for reliability analysis particularly when associated with the aim of reducing risk of harm to people. The decision maker when presented with an analysis needs to probe its relevance, its quality of input, the uncertainties and implications. These may lead to cost/benefit analysis. Such studies have been made in some applications especially when comparing options having similar characteristics. Placing values on life or life shortening, on injury, on stress is not well supported. Individual and societal risks are briefly introduced on a quantitative basis. (orig.)
