Estimation of precipitation rates by measurements of 36Cl in the GRIP ice core with the PSI/ETH tandem accelerator

Description
Within the European Greenland ice core project (GRIP) 36Cl AMS measurements have been performed on ice core samples from Summit (Greenland, 73oN, 37oW). Most data analysed so far are from the lower part of the ice core. The 36Cl concentration is well correlated with δ18O, which is considered as a proxy for paleotemperatures. Assuming that the deposition rate of radionuclides is independent of δ18O, 36Cl is used to estimate the relationship between accumulation and δ18O. The results confirm that the rapid changes of δ18O, the so-called Dansgaard-Oeschger events, are also reflected in the precipitation rate. (author) 1 fig., 3 refs
