The deployment of agrivoltaics in the vineyards of Gironde: tomorrow's alternative to today's viticultural challenges?

The concept of agrivoltaics, which consists of a synergy between agricultural production and the production of solar energy, is emerging as a recent innovation. This approach takes the form of a dual activity within the same plot of land. The aim is to take advantage of the excess light received by crops by capturing this energy via solar panels and converting it into electricity. It is against this backdrop that this study, targeting agrivoltaics on vines in the Gironde department, has emerged. Nevertheless, the wine growing sector has been experiencing a double crisis for several decades: economic and climatic. The challenges lie in the harmonious integration of the panels into the vineyards, considering the specific needs of the farmers, but also the constraints of the environment. The integration of this innovation into a rural area such as Gironde raises questions about the notion of social acceptability. Installing an agrivoltaic complex on vineyards means changing the landscape, a symbolic and polarising feature of the Gironde region. However, as well as generating income, solar panels could also play a role in protecting crops against climatic hazards (frost, hail, sun). Agrivoltaics seems to be able to strengthen wine growing resilience. In short, agrivoltaics symbolises a potential transition towards sustainable agriculture, fostered by cooperation and innovation, with a view to a more virtuous energy and agricultural future. Abstract (French)

Le concept d'agrivoltaisme, qui consiste a creer une synergie entre la production agricole et la production d'energie solaire, emerge comme une innovation recente. Cette approche se materialise par une double activite au sein d'une meme parcelle. L'objectif est de tirer parti de l'exces de lumiere recue par les cultures en captant cette energie via les panneaux solaires pour la convertir en electricite. C'est dans ce contexte qu'emerge cette etude, ciblant l'agrivoltaisme sur vigne, au sein du departement de la Gironde. Neanmoins, le secteur viticole connait depuis quelques decennies une double crise: economique et climatique. Les defis resident dans l'integration harmonieuse des panneaux sur les cultures viticoles, en tenant compte des besoins specifiques des agriculteurs, mais aussi des contraintes. L'insertion de cette innovation au sein d'un territoire rural tel que la Gironde souleve des questionnements autour de la notion d'acceptabilite sociale. En effet, l'installation d'un complexe agrivoltaique sur les vignes engendre une modification du patrimoine paysager, vecteur symbolique et polarisant du terroir girondin. Cependant, outre la possibilite d'engendrer des revenus, les panneaux solaires pourraient jouer un role de protection des cultures contre les aleas climatiques (gel, grele, soleil). L'agrivoltaisme semble etre en mesure de renforcer la resilience viticole. En definitive, l'agrivoltaisme symbolise une transition potentielle vers une agriculture durable, favorisee par la cooperation et l'innovation, en vue d'un avenir energetique et agricole plus vertueux.
