Collective acceleration of electrons by nonlinear wake fields in a plasma with mobile ions

In the present work, a number of errors from previous works have been corrected and the restrictions on the achievable values of the parameters of such an accelerator associated with the effects of the plasma-ion dynamics were obtained. The possibility of collective electron acceleration using nonlinear wake waves excited by an electron bunch in a plasma was studied analytically in the one-dimensional approximation. It was shown that the restrictions on the achievable properties of this acceleration technique, associated with the plasma ion motion that develops, will hold only in the case of a small error (1-10%, depending upon the ion mass) in satisfying the required ration of the plasma density to that of the bunch. If the error is larger, the performance of the accelerator will be limited
