Refinement of characteristics of 153Cd → 153Eu electron capture

Description

The absolute intensities of the 153Cd decay 69.7, 97.4, and 103.2 keV γ-rays measured at the V. G. Khlopin Radium Institute were found to exceed by 12 to 16% the values recommended in a handbook [Yu V. Khol'nov et al. (eds.), Characteristics of the Radiations from Radionuclides Used in the National Economy. A Handbook [in Russian], Atomizdat, Moscow (1980)]. For further refinement of the characteristics of 153Cd decay, the authors have measured the intensities of KX-rays and soft γ-radiation. The value obtained by consistent analysis of nuclear masses is accepted by the authors as the 153Cd decay energy. They also obtained for the 153Cd decay energy the value 315+300-50 keV. This value was derived in the basis of their estimated values of the KX- and γ-ray intensities, of the γ-transition internal conversion coefficient, of the calculated values of the probability for K-capture on the 153Eu levels, and finally, of the fluorescence yield for the K-shell. The energy value cited confirms the correctness of the mass difference in the 153Cd → 153Eu reaction. 11 refs., 3 tabs
