Synthesis of nanophase W and WC powders from ammonium metatungstate

  • 1. Rutgers, The State Univ. of New Jersey, Piscataway, NJ (United States). Dept. of Ceramic Engineering

Description

Nanophase α-W powder has been synthesized by reductive decomposition of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) at low temperatures (< 600 C). The formation of β-W, which is the usual product of low temperature reduction of tungsten oxides, is avoided. Thus, it has been possible to lower the carburization temperature of W to WC to about 575 C. Nanophase WC powder (< 10 nm grain size) is produced by the low temperature carburization of nanophase α-W powder
