A spectral characterization for generalized quantum gates

Description
In this article, we prove that a contraction A on a separable Hilbert space is not a generalized quantum gate (or a convex combination of unitaries) if and only if A is a semi-Fredholm with ind A≠0 and a compact perturbation of a partial isometry
