The clinical assessment on lesions shown 99mTc-MDP whole body bone scan and determination of serum levels of OPG, BSP and TRACP-5b in lung cancer patients with bone metastasis

Objective: To explore the clinical assessment on lesions show 99mTc-MDP whole body bone scan and determination of serum levels of OPG, BSP and TRACP-5b in lung cancer patients with bone metastasis. Methods: Serum levels of OPG, BSP and IRACP-5b(with ELISA) were determined in (1) 18 lung cancer definite bone metastatic lesions shown on 99mTc-MDP whole body bone scan, (2) 20 lung cancer patients without bone metastasis and, (3) 35 normal controls. Results: The serum levels of OPG, BSP and TRACP-5b in patients with bone metastasis showed significantly higher than in those without bone metastasis and controls(all P < 0.01). Among them, the 3 serum marker levels in patients with ≥ 3 bone lesions proved notably higher than the patients with ≤ 2 bone lesions and without bone metastasis (the lesions were classified malignant metastasis as defined in this article) (all P < 0.05, all P < 0.01). There were 142 bone lesions all told in 18 lung cancer with bone metastasis. The statistics expressed metastases number were positively related with the serum levels of OPG, TRACP-5b and BSP, specially in patients with ≥ 3 bone lesions (r = 0.809, 0.965, P < 0.01, r = 0.617, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overexpressing of serum OPG, BSP and TRACP-5b closely related with osseous metastases in lung cancer, so determination of the serum markers might be helpful to diagnose and monitor the bone metastasis.
