Theoretical neutron spectrum of a 14 MeV neutron tube with cylindrical ion acceleration structure

Description
The energy distribution of '14 MeV neutrons' at the axial sample irradiation position of a sealed neutron tube with cylindrical acceleration structure used at the GKSS facility KORONA has been calculated. The underlying physical principles and the mathematical formulation are, to some detail, described in the paper. The most propable energy of the total neutron spectrum including elastic scattering is found to be 14.60 MeV with a FWHM of 0.60 MeV. The contribution of scattered neutrons is about 29%. The effects of scattering in the sample and the influence of the neutron spectrum on the average activation cross-section are discussed for some typical cases. (orig.)

Es wurde die Energieverteilung von '14-MeV-Neutronen' in der axialen Probenbestrahlungsposition einer abgeschmolzenen Neutronenroehre mit zylindrischer Beschleunigungsstruktur, wie sie in der GKSS-Anlage KORONA betrieben wird, theoretisch berechnet. Die physikalischen Gegebenheiten und die mathematische Formulierung werden ausfuehrlich beschrieben. Fuer die wahrscheinlichste Energie im Neutronenspektrum ergibt sich unter Einbeziehung von Streuprozessen 14,60 MeV bei einer Halbwertsbreite von 0,60 MeV. Der Anteil der gestreuten Neutronen im Gesamtfluss betraegt etwa 29%. Auch Streueffekte in der Probe selbst und die Abhaengigkeit des mittleren Aktivierungsquerschnittes vom Neutronenspektrum werden anhand von typischen Beispielen diskutiert. (orig.)
