Development of Cold Neutron Bio-REF and its Applications

Description

Bio-REF was also relocated from the reactor hall instrument, REF-H, which was first instrument of horizontal sample geometry in Korea and its spectrometer part was transferred to HANARO from BNL, and monochromator part was made locally and combined together to work as REF-H 3 years ago. Then it has been used for a bio-measuring instruments and mirror testing, which were fabricated at HANARO for the CNRF. In this instrument major part and structure was changed and modified and was installed in cold neutron facility and newly name as Bio-REF. Liquid and solid samples, too, could be applied by utilizing two measurement modes, and it has its largest value of Qz of ∼ 0.23 A-1 for liquid samples, and 0.6A-1 for solid samples. In the new instrument structure, neutron beam path, sample stage and detector motion system can move independently to overcome the aligning difficulties of the instruments and operation flexibility. Based on the result of radiation survey of monochromator shield, neutron and gamma radiation in shielding surface were evaluated less than reference value, 6.25 uSv/hr. by using gold wire NAA, neutron flux of 4.75 A was evaluated at the location of monochromator by 9.46 x 108n/cm2/sec. by applying the cooled beryllium filter 2nd order wavelength portion was removed. and checked by measurements of neutron time of flight.
