NMR study of hydrogen-doped α-Ti alloys

Description

Nuclear magnetic resonance was used to investigate four Ti base alloys containing 1 or 2 at. % H, namely Ti--1 at. % V, Ti--2 at. % V, Ti--1 at. % Al, and Ti--2 at. % Al. A comparison of the solute (51V or 27Al) NMR absorption curve with the corresponding alloys containing no H gives information about the trapping of hydrogen in these systems. For the hydrogen-doped Ti--2 at. % V alloy, a line-shape change was observed at room but not at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. Thermodynamic and kinetic arguments that include the presence of hydride, dissolved hydrogen, and trapped hydrogen are offered to explain the data. No change in the solute resonance line was detected for the other hydrogen-doped alloys
