Quadrupole relaxation of 114Sb impurities in liquid Sn and of 202Tl impurities in liquid Hg

Description

Recent nuclear quadrupole relaxation (tausup(-1)sub(Q)) measurements of 207Po impurities in liquid Pb revealed a temperature dependence of tausup(-1)sub(Q) incompatible with a diffusion based mechanism which is favoured by most of the experimental tausup(-1)sub(Q) data in liquid metals and alloys. To investigate this problem tausup(-1)sub(Q) measurements were performed in liquid Sn which has the same valency as Pb. As a probe nucleus the 8-, 210 μs state in 114Sb was used. Relaxation rates tausup(-1)sub(R) were measured as a function of target temperature by the TDPAD method. In addition a measurement of the temperature dependence of tausup(-1)sub(R) of 202Tl(7+, Tsub(1/2) = 572 μs, g = 0.128) impurities in liquid Hg observed by the TDPAD method is reported. (Auth.)
