From radiation to result
Description
The harmful effects of ionizing radiation (hereinafter IR) have been known since 1897, when Antoine Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity. The processes of action of IR on the body are still not fully known. IR can cause tissue reactions on the skin such as redness, chronic inflammation of the skin or the formation of abscesses, IR can also cause cancer of various organs, leukemia or cause genetic consequences in offspring. One of the effective measures to reduce the radiation exposure of workers is monitoring using personal dosimeters. A large number of different types of dosimeters are used in practice. In Slovakia, dosimetric systems are regularly inspected on the basis of the Metrology Act, the Radiation Protection Act and must meet the requirements of technical standards. In the lecture, the authors focus on obtaining results from thermoluminescence dosimeters. They will gradually show the process from receiving the dosimeter from the customer through measurement, evaluation, and determining the final dose that the worker received for the given period.
