Converting lift trucks from propane to natural gas : a winning solution
Description
Today the majority of lift trucks are propelled by propane. However, their conversion to natural gas (a technology that is still not well understood) would not only be economical, but would also improve air quality, the environment and even safety. Upon the recommendation of Les Consultants SOTEME such a conversion took place in a manufacturing plant located in de Lanaudiere, Quebec. The plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with 50 lift trucks to handle in-house stock. The two main pollutants (carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocarbons) were reduced significantly as were fuel consumption and annual operating costs. A techno-economic examination of the conversion program developed by Gaz Metropolitain by a specialist knowledgeable in the field, was recommended as an essential first step. 1 fig
