Oxygen redistribution in UO2 due to a temperature gradient
Description
Uranium dioxide exhibits a wide range of stoichiometry, with the deviation from stoichiometry, x, ranging from --0.31 to +0.24. The observation of oxygen redistribution in uranium dioxide-based fuels in a nuclear reactor and the consequent effect on operational performance parameters has prompted investigation of the migration of oxygen in a temperature gradient. Laboratory studies consist in annealing the samples in a temperature gradient, quenching to room temperature, and measuring the resulting composition profiles. The results have been interpreted in terms of an effective heat of transport relating concentration changes to the temperature gradient for the particular experimental conditions
