Nuclear Regulatory Commission perspectives on the control of EMI in digital I ampersand C systems
Creators
Description
The scope of this set of figures/diagrams includes safety concerns, the scope of NRC reviews, licensee activities, and NRC research activities as related to the control of EMI in digital instrumentation and control systems. Conclusions of this presentation are that there is a potential for random and unpredictable effects on safety system equipment performance as a result of susceptibility to the ambient electromagnetic/radiofrequency environment or from equipment emissions; the licensee is required to address electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues as part of its environmental qualification; industry EMC standards may be used to evaluate the adequacy of licensees' designs, implementations, and operations; and a balanced design approach will ensure against unexpected regulatory delays
