Studies of magnetic substorms using ground-based, balloon, rocket and satellite observations
Description
This paper will deals with the present understanding of the configuration of particles and fields in the region of the auroral oval, and will point out the conflicts and disagreements which surround some of these concepts. The strengths and weaknesses of the various methods of monitoring substorm activity are discussed, and some suggestions are made as to ways of resolving the existing misunderstandings in the field of substorm morphology in the light of anticipated research activity during the IMS
