Oxidation of iodide and technically pure zirconium

  • 1. AN Ukrainskoj SSR, Kiev (Ukrainian SSR). Inst. Problem Materialovedeniya

Description

Impurity elements are studied for their effect on oxidation of α- and β-zirconium in the air within the temperature range of 500-1300 deg C. α-zirconium is positively influenced during oxidation by its dispersion hardening by impurity elements in the narrow time and temperature ranges. But wedge-like intergrowth of scale into metal, connected with irregular distribution of impurity elements, increases a degree of oxygen dissolution, and hence, the rate of the process. Removal of impurity elements, which stipulate growth of metal saturation degree by oxygen plays a decisive role in increasing oxygen solubility and the process rate during β-zirconium oxidation
