France / Monitoring of the impact of radioactive fallouts. Independent control means must be strengthened and devices managed by public bodies must be improved - CRIIRAD Communique

Published 33 years after the Chernobyl accident, and while referring to this accident, this communique first outlines the necessity to monitor radioactivity in a way which is independent of State services, outlines the deficiencies of public services in this respect, outlines the necessity to require a higher transparency of these services, discusses the benefits and limitations of radioactivity measurements performed by citizens. It also proposes a brief overview of measurements which showed a sustained contamination of soils by Caesium 137 in southeastern France, and evokes the on-line publication by the Criirad of an atlas of soil contamination in April 2017
