Parametric excitation of sound oscillations in a solid-state plasma

  • 1. Moskovskij Inzhenerno-Fizicheskij Inst. (USSR)

Description

The paper considers the parametric excitation of volume acoustic oscillations - acoustic plasmons, phonons and zero sound - by a high-frequency homogeneous electric field in metals, semi-metals and semiconductors described by the two-component Fermi-liquid model. The growth rates of the acoustic wave and the magnitudes of the threshold intensities of the external field have been found. The order of these magnitudes has been evaluated for transition metals, extrinsic semiconductors (of the InSb type) and semi-metals (Bi). It has been shown that the high value of the threshold field in metals makes it difficult to observe acoustic oscillations. It is indicated that the Fermi-liquid coefficients Asub(o)sup(ij) can be determined from the value of the excitation threshold of zero-sound oscillations. (author)
