Tumor and normal tissue effects and therapeutic gain factor for Cf-252

Description
The need for more data on the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of Cf-252 neutron/gamma radiation as a function of dose rate has been recognized. The authors addressed this problem testing dose rates that were commonly used in the clinic. In particular low dose rate (LDR) irradiations were used. The determination of RBE values for experimental and normal tissues was a first step towards the estimation of the gain factor. The authors review methods and results obtained in their laboratory.
