Evaluation of the influence of the groundwater level on the thickness of the petroleum hydrocarbon layer at the selected locality

Oil substances represent one of the most numerous pollutants among the confirmed environmental burdens in the Slovak Republic. This paper evaluates work on the environmental burden: Inlet object of the Maly Dunaj. The area was polluted by intentional damage to the pipeline and subsequent leakage of diesel fuel into the rock environment and groundwater. The locality has a suitable close location near the watercourse - the response time to the change of the Danube level at the locality is in the order of hours to days. During the observed period of 2001 - 2015, the impact was found at elevated groundwater levels, when the thickness of the petroleum hydrocarbon layer decreases. Following the lifting of the increased groundwater levels, the pollution bound in the higher horizons of the aeration zone is released. Long-term monitoring of remediation sites can prevent the recurrence of pollution when the maximum or minimum groundwater level is reached. (authors)
