Description

A study of the superconducting and warm options of the solenoidal magnet for the ALICE detector under development at CERN is given. The superconducting magnet includes a thin superconducting coil of 0.8 m inner diameter and 1.5 m in length with a field strength of 1.2 T and a C-shaped iron yoke. The second option represents a large solenoid 9.2 m in diameter and 10 m in length. The magnet field strength in this version is 0.2 T. The field distribution in both cases satisfies the requirements of the experiment. (orig.)
