Description
Bistriazinyl Pyridines are a class of extractants which have been investigated widely for Am(III) -Eu(III) separation from aqueous nitric acid medium. This has been done with the aim of investigating these extractants for Actinide Partitioning from High Level Liquid Waste (HLLW). Due to the presence of large excess of trivalent lanthanides as fission products, which have properties identical to those of the trivalent actinides, a two-step separation strategy based on solvent extraction is currently accepted and widely followed for achieving Actinide Partitioning. Different alkylated BTPs have been investigated for this purpose and all have achieved the Am-Eu separation efficiently in 0.5-1 M HNO3 medium. Camphor-Bistriazinyl-Pyridine i.e., Bis-2, 6- (5, 6, 7, 8-tetrahydro-5, 9, 9-trimethyl-5, 8-methano-1, 2, 4-benzotriazin-3-yl) pyridine (CA-BTP) was first reported in 2011. It was reported that this extractant is hydrolytically stable and third phase behaviour is seen at an aqueous acidity > 3 M HNO3. CA-BTP was synthesized by us and investigated for Am (III) separation directly from HLLW. The extraction of Am (III) was carried out after the dilution of the HLLW to < 2 M HNO3
