Description

Widely research has been done on making an all solid and compact pulsed power system. New low impedance, all solid-state and compact coiled strip pulse forming line is designed in this paper. Characteristic parameter is analyzed theoretically. By using simulation software, the electromagnetic field distribution and the formation process of the pulse are simulated. According to the results of the theoretic analysis and simulation, a coiled strip pulse forming line configuration with output voltage of 20 kV, pulse duration of 230 ns, characteristic impedance of 0.5 was designed and manufactured. The strip line uses a DMD film as the dielectric and a copper belt as the conductor. When it is unrolled, the volume of the strip line is 23 000 mm x 400 mm x 1.6 mm, when it is rolled, it turns into a cylinder with diameter of 311 mm. The size and weight are ten times smaller than those of traditional dielectric of oil or water dielectric pulse forming line with the same require electrical parameter. Acting as a transmission line and a pulse forming line, some experiments are carried out with the strip line respectively. When used as a transmission line, one can see the signal was delayed 115 ns, and did not cause an obvious distortion of the signal; when used as a pulse forming line, an output of a 4.5 kV, 9 kA, 265 ns quasi-square wave on the load is obtained.
