Combined measurement of maternal serum FE3 and HPL for determination of fetus-placenta function

Objective: To investigate the clinical application of combined measurement of maternal serum FE3 and HPL for determination of fetus-placenta function. Methods: Maternal serum FE3 and HPL levels were measured with RIA in 86 complicated and 39 non-complicated pregnant women. Results: Serum FE3 contents in pregnant women complicated with hypertensive syndrome, intrauterine fetal distress, gestation above 33 wks complicated with diabetes and 3rd grade placenta were significantly lower than those in non-complicated ones (p<0.05). Serum HPL contents in pregnant women complicated with intrauterine fetal retardation above 29 wks, hypertensive syndrome and 3rd grade placenta were also significantly lower than those in non-complicated controls (p<0.05). Measurement of either single item yielded rather low positive rate. With combined measurement, positive rate in intrauterine fetal retardation was 85.7%, 50% in those complicated with diabetes and 57.7% in those with 3rd grade placenta. Conclusion: Combined measurement of material serum FE3 and HPL could improve the early diagnosis of high-risk pregnancies
