The hollow, clumpy outflow from η Carinae
Description
High-resolution infrared maps are presented of part of the Homunculus nebula that surrounds the unstable, supermassive star η Carinae. Maps at 1.2 and 2.2 μm show the effects of scattering in the nebula, whereas those at 3.8 and 4.8 μm reveal the thermal emission of the dust, and show a somewhat different morphology. The nebula is optically thin except very close to the central star, so the distribution and temperature of the dust can be deduced. (author)
