Atomic memory from Hiroshima to Fukushima: art as transmission

This dissertation offers a multidisciplinary analysis of the artworks produced after the Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima disasters, placing them in the context of a 'post-atomic art of witness'. Crossing art history, politics and sociology, the aim is to examine how these tragic events have influenced artistic creation and the transmission of collective memory. The study is structured around two complementary axes. The first involves an analysis of works produced in the years immediately following the events, revealing the direct impact of the tragedies on artists and their creations. The second explores the mechanisms for transmitting memory through art, several decades later, focusing in particular on the resonances between the memories of Fukushima and Hiroshima-Nagasaki, revived by the nuclear disaster of 2011
Abstract (French)
Ce memoire propose une analyse pluridisciplinaire des oeuvres d'art produites apres les catastrophes d'Hiroshima, Nagasaki et Fukushima, en les inscrivant dans une reflexion autour d'un 'art de temoignage post-atomique'. En croisant l'histoire de l'art, la politique et la sociologie, il s'agit d'examiner comment ces evenements tragiques ont influence la creation artistique et la transmission de la memoire collective. L'etude se structure en deux axes complementaires. Le premier s'attache a une analyse des oeuvres realisees dans les annees qui ont suivi immediatement ces evenements, revelant l'impact direct des tragedies sur les artistes et leurs creations. Le second axe explore les mecanismes de transmission de la memoire a travers l'art, plusieurs decennies plus tard, en s'interessant notamment aux resonances entre les memoires de Fukushima et d'Hiroshima-Nagasaki, ravivees par la catastrophe nucleaire de 2011.
