Description
SPWR: The simplified PWR (3 loop passive and simplified PWR) technology is one of the new approaches to light water reactors. It attempts to reduce of equipment and maintenance through the implementation of simplified, passive systems mainly in the safety systems. Plant cooldown following a LOCA is to be performed by passive safety systems only. The reference design is the AP-600 which has a 2 loop RCS. The SPWR is rated at about 900 MWe while maintaining essentially the same passive safety system configuration in the AP-600. SPWR designs were evaluated with respect to: 1) The large core power rating compared with the AP-600. 2) Japanese safety requirements which differ from those of the U.S. (author)
