Radiological status of electron accelerators at CAT, Indore

  • 1. Health Physics Unit, Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore (India)

Description

Many low, medium and high-energy electron accelerators are being operated at Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore. When electrons from the beam in these accelerators interact with vacuum chamber and other components, Bremsstrahlung photons and electron-positron pairs are produced. In order to protect the working personnel from this harmful ionizing radiation, adequate shielding has been put around these accelerator facilities. Present paper discusses radiation levels observed in accessible areas as well as inaccessible areas of major accelerator facilities like Indus-1 Synchrotron Radiation Source, Industrial and Medical Accelerators viz. DC Accelerator, Radio Therapy Machine and Linear Accelerator. Ion chamber based survey meters are being used for assessing radiation levels outside shielded areas where as on-line area monitors and integrating type dosimeters are being used to assess radiation levels inside the shielded areas.
