Leucocyte status in patients during radiotherapy by linear accelerator

  • 1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (India). Dept. of Radiation Oncology

Description

Alterations in the various leucocyte components in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy by linear accelerator and telecobalt unit were evaluated. The change was found to be dependent on the dose rate, which was 300 cGy/min in linear accelerator and 127 cGy/min in telecobalt. Apart from the monocyte which registered a significant rise in patients on linear accelerator (p 0.01) all other components showed a downward trend as compared to their pre-treatment level. Patients on telecobalt had marked deterioration of these parameters. These findings indicate that higher dose rate radiotherapy preserves the cellular components engaged in anticancer immune mechanism and hence an improvement in the prognosis may be expected.
