Surface activity of 137Cs, sheet 36 - Banska Bystrica

Map of surface activity of cesium has been compiled from the survey results on scale 1:200 000 and locally, north from Banska Bystrica and Stolicke hills, between Tisovec and Rimavska Bana, on scale 1:50 000. In the predominantly mountainous terrain very varied and uneven distribution of 137Cs areal activities was mapped. The predominant surface activities of 137Cs in the range from 1000 to 2000 Bq · m-2 are observed only at 35% of the area, the lowest in Slovakia (national average is 48.8%).The 137Cs activities over 3000 Bq · m-2 are generated in surface extent up to 25.1%. It is the second highest representation after sheet 45 - Nitra. The geometric mean of 137Cs surface activities on this map sheet (1630 Bq · m-2) is higher than nationwide (1333 Bq · m-2). 137Cs activities over 10000 Bq · m-2 were recorded in three areas: the southern edge of Banska Bystrica and Stiavnicke mountains - south-west and north from Banska Stiavnica. There, in vicinity of Podhorie also the highest surface activity of 137Cs = 18077 Bq · m-2 was measured. (authors)
