Subteranean surveying apparatus including a support portion, a connector portion, an instrument housing portion, an instrument positioning portion, an instrument monitoring portion and an instrument control portion; the support portion including a horizontal reference surface, a base section extending downwardly from the reference surface, mechanism for leveling the reference surface; the connector portion including a torsionally rigid mast assembly suspended from the reference surface and extending downwardly therefrom, the mast assembly including a plurality of elongated members disposed in an end to end relationship; the instrument housing portion including an elongated hollow section affixed to the lower end of the mast assembly, at least one opening in the hollow section intermediate the ends thereof, a television camera disposed within the hollow section adjacent the opening, a light source disposed adjacent to the camera; the instrument positioning portion including lifting mechanism mounted on the support portion base section connected to the instrument housing portion; the instrument monitoring portion including a television receiver located adjacent to the support portion, indexing mechanism disposed adjacent to the reference surface connected to the upper end of the mast assembly for determining the orientation of the camera; the instrument control portion including control mechanism for the camera and for the light source, a power source for the apparatus
