Effect of gamma radiation on the eggs of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)

Description
Studies on the susceptibility of eggs of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) to gamma radiation revealed that the radiosensitivity of eggs decreased with the increasing age of the embryo and the development of the embryo was arrested if the eggs were irradiated in the early stage of development (24-48 hr old). However, when 72-96 hr old eggs were irradiated, comparatively higher dose was required to render them nonviable. Mortality of the eggs of the same age group was directly related to the radiation dose. Survival of the insect to the adult stage was prevented by exposure to a dose of 8 Krad or more, irrespective of the age of the eggs. (author)
