Calculation of excitation cross sections and oscillator strengths for vanadium and manganese atoms

  • 1. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland

Description

The cross sections for electron-impact excitation and the oscillator strengths are calculated for several spectral lines corresponding to transitions between quartet and sextet terms of vanadium and between sextet terms of manganese. The cross sections are calculated in the Born approximation. Configurational mixing is taken into account in the atomic wave functions of the excited states. This mixing strongly affects the results. The radial wave functions are found by a semiempirical method. A comparison is made with experimental data, with allowance for the relationship between the oscillator strengths and the excitation cross sections
