The issues addressed at this international conference and exhibition on the performance of ships and structure in ice reflect the current and rapid growth and renewed interest in oil and gas exploration and production in Arctic offshore regions. The conference highlighted the continuing interest in northern sea routes, including the Canadian Northwest Passage, and Canada's jurisdiction over the longest coastline in the world. The technical and plenary sessions covered a broad range of topics with emphasis on icebreaking ships, ice resistant structures and operations in ice. The conference also featured special sessions on Arctic structures and on Arctic shipping. The technical sessions were entitled: Arctic emergency, evacuation, rescue (EER) and safety; Arctic shipping; environmental issues; icebreaker performance; ice-structure interactions; Northern Sea routes; offshore development engineering; regulations and Arctic marine shipping assessment (AMSA); Sakhalin developments; and, subsea systems.
