Description

Some aspects of the magnetohydrodynamic theory for high-beta axisymmetric magnetic confinement configurations are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the application of the high-beta tokamak ordering to study the equilibrium and stability of diffuse plasmas. The theory of ballooning modes is presented in the framework of the ordering. The high-beta version of the Mercier criterion is derived and it is shown that it does not reduce to the low-beta expression on axis. Results of stability studies for tokamaks and toroidal screw-pinches are presented. (author). 69 refs, 4 figs
