Neutrons, a time-dependent thermometer of heavy-ion collisions

  • 1. Hahn-Meitner-Institut fur Kernforschung Berlin, Glienickerstr. 100, 1000 Berlin 39 (Germany, F.R.)

Description

The time evolution of the energy dissipation and deexcitation in central and peripheral heavy-ion collisions is discussed for the reaction /sup 165/Ho + /sup 20/Ne at 11, 14.6 and 20.1 MeV/μ bombarding energy. To this purpose the neutron energy-spectra, mean neutron multiplicities and neutron multiplicity-distribution were studied. Though the majority of neutrons are emitted from an equilibrated system, approximately 5 to 15% of the neutrons are emitted before the system reaches a thermal equilibrium. The data is compared with the statistical model and various preequilibrium models
