Licensing and fabrication of a new truck cask

Description

This paper reports that Nuclear Assurance Corporation (NAC) recently completed the development of a legal weight truck cask, the NAC-LWT, which was awarded U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Certificate of Compliance No. 9225 (Certificate No. 9225). The initial design effort for the NAC-LWT was begun in December of 1986 with the establishment of goals for cask payload and cool time. The hope was that a longer cool time (5 years) could reduce the shielding requirements enough that up to three PWR assemblies could be carried. The legal weight truck limit had been raised by all 50 states from 73,280 pounds to 80,000 pounds, and the increased weight allowance contributed to the higher payload potential. Structural and shielding design calculations in the first half of 1987 showed that thicker steel walls would be required in the new design
