The optimisation of shield design

Description

This paper presents a technique of applying the ALARA principle, recommended by ICRP Publication 261, to the shield design of fuel reprocessing and associated plants. A methodology for the complete process of shield design is given, and studied by reference to the shield design of a post-irradiation examination (PIE) facility for nuclear fuel assemblies. Finally, the ALARA principle is applied to demonstrate its use as an additional technique in the decision making process and the optimisation of the shield design of the PIE facility. (author)
