A two-crystal neutron diffractometer

Description

The principle of the diffractometer for measuring small angle scattering of thermal neutrons consists in the use of two elastically distored crystals in a dispersionless arrangement. One of them has an orientation for symmetric reflection, whereas the other has an orientation for completely asymmetric reflection. The small angle neutron scattering is measured by means of a position-sensitive detector located after the output from the second crystal. This arrangement eliminates a disadvantage of conventional diffractometers, viz. the necessity of measuring the neutron intensity in angular steps by turning the second crystal over a certain angle range.
