Modified and improved method of whole abdominal irradiation - open field type

Description

Instead of hyperfractionated whole abdominal irradiation, the following treatment scheme is adopted: daily dose of 1.5 Gy/5 fractions a week and total dose 20 - 30 Gy. The irradiation volume comprises the whole abdomen. Certain corrections irradiation volume are done having in mind the predilection early sub-diaphragmatic metastasizing of ovarian carcinoma. Irradiation is effected trough two opposite antero-posterior fields at STD=182 cm, making possible to obtain a field measuring up to 48x48 cm at this particular distance. Adequate protection of critical organs at risk is secured by more accurate localization and topography using routine scintigraphy, echography, intravenous pyelography and computerized tomography. Dose homogeneity in the irradiation volume depends on the patient's individual size. At ±2 cm differences in depth of the various irradiation points dose differences conditioned by varying TAR and source-point distances amount to ± 10 percent
