Interferometric study on surface evaporation and boiling of a liquid under sharp pressure drop

  • 1. Wisconsin Univ., Madison (USA)

Description

Free surface evaporation and boiling occurring at the upper liquid surface and resulting in two-phase mixture outbursts have been considered. The Mach-Zonder interferometer and high-speed photography of the processes in freon-2 (trichlorinefluorinemethane) are used. The picture of interference bands shows discrete volumes or ''droplets'' of supercooled liquid absorbing heat from the surrounding liquid body. The ''droplet'' temperature profile sequences obtained in 0.8-1.4 s intervals are presented. It has been also found out that both evaporation and boiling occur, the boiling being spread out at more or less uniform intervals across the surface. The vapor produced erupts in the upward direction carrying along with it the supercooled liquid. This results in two-phase liquid outbursts from the free surface
