Speciation in organic phases of mixed solvent extraction systems including a malonamide and a dialkyl-phosphoric acid

Description

The aim of the thesis is to improve the understanding of chemical equilibria involved in the actinides(III) and lanthanides(III) extraction in the DIAMEX-SANEX hydrometallurgical process used for spent nuclear fuel treatment. The chemical extraction equilibria have to be better described in order to improve the modeling of extractant properties of this process. The organic phase is composed of a mixture of extractants: a malonamide, the DMDOHEMA, and a dialkyl-phosphoric acid, the HDEHP, both diluted in an alkane. The extractant mixture DMDOHEMA-HDEHP has a singular behavior compared to the behavior of the individual extractants. There is a synergistic effect during the extraction of Eu(III) and Am(III) in acid medium (about 1 mol/L aqueous nitric acid concentration) and an antagonist effect at low acidity (pH ≤ 1). In order to understand the behavior of this chemical system, molecular speciation was performed using various spectrometry methods (electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy) but also quantum chemistry calculation to optimize geometry of the complexes. These studies have shown the existence of mixed complexes, thermodynamically more stable than the unit complexes, explaining the synergistic extraction of metal cations. The existence of an adduct between the two extractants, consuming the free extractants, may explain the antagonistic effect. (author)

Abstract (French)

Le but de la these est d'ameliorer la comprehension des equilibres chimiques mis en jeu lors de l'extraction des actinides(III) et des lanthanides(III) dans le procede hydrometallurgique DIAMEX-SANEX de retraitement du combustible nucleaire use. Il s'agit de decrire au mieux les differents equilibres chimiques pour ameliorer la modelisation des proprietes extractantes de ce procede. La phase organique est constituee d'un melange d'extractants: un malonamide, le DMDOHEMA, et un acide dialkylphosphorique, le HDEHP, dilues dans un alcane. Ce melange extractant presente un comportement singulier compare au comportement des deux extractants seuls. On observe un effet synergique vis-a-vis de l'extraction d'Eu(III) et Am(III) en milieu acide (HNO3 ≅ 1 mol/L en phase aqueuse) et un effet antagoniste a faible acidite (pH ≤ 1). Dans le but de comprendre ce comportement, des etudes de speciation moleculaires ont ete realisees apres extraction de Ln(III) et Am(III) par diverses techniques spectroscopiques complementaires (spectrometrie de masse a ionisation electrospray, spectroscopie IR, spectrometrie RMN, spectrofluorimetrie laser a resolution temporelle, spectrophotometrie UV-Visible) mais egalement par des calculs de chimie quantique pour optimiser la geometrie des complexes formes. Ces etudes ont montre l'existence de complexes mixtes incluant les deux extractants, thermodynamiquement plus stables que les complexes unitaires, permettant d'expliquer la synergie sur l'extraction des cations metalliques. L'existence d'un adduit entre les deux extractants, venant consommer les extractants libres, expliquerait l'effet antagoniste observe a faible acidite
