Contribution of bone scintigraphy in the staging of cancer at the university hospital Yalgado Ouedraogo (CHUYO): About 70 cases

Bone scintigraphy 99mTc-MDP is a test carried out at the university hospital CHUYO since January 2012. After a few months of operation, our aim is to study the contribution of bone scintigraphy in the staging of cancer at the university hospital Yalgado Ouedraogo. This is a retrospective descriptive study conducted from January 2012 to March 2013. Seventy (70) patients were included in the study, all with a known or unknown primary tumor, and who have received a bone scan in search of bone metastases. Bone scintigraphy was performed using 99mTc-MDP at the late phase, an average of 3 hours after injection. Of the seventy (70) patients in the study, fifty-six (56) patients or 80% of cases had a known primary tumor. Of these patients, 23 (41%) had prostate cancer and 22 or 39.3% of cases had breast cancer. Forty-four (44) patients or 78.6% of cases received a bone scan as part of the monitoring of cancer. Bone scintigraphy has revealed some suspect hyperfixations of bone metastases in 45.8% of patients. The spine, pelvis and ribs were the sites most frequently affected by metastases. Prostate and breast cancers were the most frequent. The diagnostic value of bone scintigraphy is mainly due to its high sensitivity, which enables an early diagnosis. As for further exploration, the results must be considered in the clinical context. (authors)

La scintigraphie osseuse au MDP-Tc99m est un examen qui est realise au CHUYO depuis janvier 2012. Apres quelques mois de fonctionnement, nous nous proposons d'etudier la contribution de la scintigraphie osseuse dans le bilan d'extension des cancers au centre hospitalier universitaire Yalgado Ouedraogo. Il s'agit d'une etude retrospective a visee descriptive qui s'est deroulee de janvier 2012 a mars 2013. Soixante-dix patients ont ete inclus dans l'etude, tous ayant une tumeur primitive connue ou non et ayant beneficie d'une scintigraphie osseuse a la recherche de metastases osseuses. La scintigraphie osseuse a ete realisee au MDP-Tc99m au temps tardif, en moyenne 3 heures apres injection. Sur les 70 patients de l'etude, 56, soit 80 % des cas, avaient une tumeur primitive connue. Parmi ces patients, 23 avaient un cancer prostatique, soit 41 % des cas et 22 avaient un cancer mammaire, soit 39,3 % des cas. Quarante-quatre patients ont beneficie d'une scintigraphie osseuse dans le cadre de la surveillance d'un cancer, soit 78,6 % des cas. La scintigraphie osseuse a permis la mise en evidence d'images d'hyperfixation suspectes de metastases osseuses chez 45,8 % des patients. Le rachis, le bassin et les cotes etaient les sites les plus frequemment atteints par les metastases. Les cancers de la prostate et du sein etaient les plus frequents. La valeur diagnostique de la scintigraphie osseuse est essentiellement due a sa forte sensibilite qui autorise un diagnostic precoce.
