Alpha induced fission in 238U

  • 1. CEA Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, 91 - Gif-sur-Yvette (France)

Description

Fission in 235U was induced by alpha, in the energy range of 20 to 29.4 MeV and the dependence of the fragment mass yield and kinetic energy on the Excitation energy of the Compound Nucleus (ExCN) was investigated. The fission fragments were recorded in coincidence and the detailed information concerning the fragment mass, kinetic energy were extracted from the correlated data using the Schmitt calibration procedure. Significant changes in the mass and kinetic energy were observed with ExCN. The average Total Kinetic Energy (TKE) was found to decrease with ExCN and this decreasing behaviour was related mainly due to the changes that have taken place in the distributions. (author)
