1329 - 294: a new edge-on cataclysmic variable

Description

The discovery is reported of 1329-294 a new cataclysmic variable found from a survey of blue objects around the field of the galaxy M83. Spectra obtained in the region lambdalambda3200-7000 A show HI and HeI lines with a double peak structure superimposed on a flat continuum and a strong Balmer jump in emission. HeII lines are not present or are very weak. The HI lines have a FWZI approx.= to 3800 km s-1 and a peak-to-peak separation of approx. 1360 km s-1. The blue magnitude is 17.5. This system is of particular interest because it is observed almost edge-on so that it may be possible to observe eclipses and derive the parameters of the system. (author)
