NS OTTO HAHN - the first German nuclear ship

The NS OTTO HAHN is the first and only European nuclear propelled cargo and research vessel. She entered service in 1968 and was operated for 11 years without any technical failure. The essential experience and know-how about the nuclear propulsion unit is available now. Therefore the ship was decommissioned in 1979. Until the end of 1981 all activated and contaminated components will be removed and decontaminated. The ship can then be released for conventional utilization. In this book the NS OTTO HAHN is described in detail and the experiences of operation as well as research and development activities are reported. All earlier publications of GKSS on the same subject are listed. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Das NS OTTO HAHN ist das erste und bisher einzige nuklear angetriebene Fracht- und Forschungsschiff Europas. Es wurde 1968 in Dienst gestellt und war dann fast elf Jahre lang ohne technische Stoerungen in Betrieb. Danach lagen die wesentlichen mit der nuklearen Antriebsanlage gewonnenen Erfahrungen und Erkenntnisse vor. Das Schiff wurde deshalb 1979 stillgelegt. Bis Ende 1981 werden alle aktivierten und kontaminierten Anlagenteile vom Schiff entfernt oder dekontaminiert sein. Das Schiff kann dann fuer eine konventionelle Nutzung freigegeben werden. In der vorliegenden Schrift wird das NS OTTO HAHN eingehend beschrieben sowie ueber die Betriebserfahrungen und die durchgefuehrten Forschungsarbeiten berichtet. Alle frueheren Veroeffentlichungen der GKSS zum gleichen Thema sind aufgefuehrt. (orig.)
