Study of the strong interaction effects associated with heavy quark systems in the Υ(4S) energy region

Description

The specific strong interaction effects associated with heavy quark systems in the Υ(4S) energy region have been studied using data collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). The author reports on the observation of ψ mesons from Υ(4S) decays which are too energetic to come from B mesons. These events provide the first evidence for non-B bar B decay of the Υ(4S). The measured rate is Bτ(Υ(4S) → ψX) = (0.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.04)T for ψ momenta above 2 GeV/c. He also reports on the first positive evidence of a signal for Ds+ → φl+ν. He has measured the ratio Γ(Ds+ → φl+ν)/Γ(Ds+ → φπ+) = 0.49 ± 0.10-0.14+0.10 and uses this measurement to determine the absolute branching ratio of Ds+ → φπ+ as Bτ(Ds+ → φπ+) = (3.1 ± 0.6-0.6+0.9 ± 0.6)%
