The influence of helium on high temperature fatigue of Type 316 stainless steel

Description

Using α-particle implantation the effect of He on the high temperature fatigue properties of solution annealed type 316 stainless steel has been studied. Large reductions in the number of cycles to fracture coupled with intergranular fracture have been found above temperatures of around 600 deg C. The influence of He increases with increasing temperature and He dose and is particularly pronounced below a critical frequency which is around a few Hz at 600 deg C. (author)
